5.4 PTR: Profession Additions and Changes
posted 6 hr 59 min ago by perculia
On the 5.4 PTR, several professions are getting new recipes and vanity items! Engineering has the most interesting things with the return of Pierre, but crafters can make new epics, chefs can make Pandaren Treasure Noodle Cart Kit, and all enchants can be put on heirlooms.
Engineering
- Engineers are getting some new vanity items in 5.4!
- On the PTR, any mob in Vale of Eternal Blossoms can drop Schematic: Chief Engineer Jard's Journal. This is smart loot, meaning that it will only drop for eligible Engineers.
- This contains recipes for Jard's Peculiar Energy Source, Not Sky Claw, Advanced Refrigeration Unit, Pierre, and Rascal-Bot.
- Jard's Peculiar Energy Source can only be crafted once a day and requires 10 Ghost Iron Bar.
- Not Sky Claw was originally called the Skyclaw back in 5.2, so it may be reusing an item ID and changing completely due to the different name and "teaches you how to ride the PH." It takes 30 Jard's Peculiar Energy Source and Living Steel to craft.
- Advanced Refrigeration Unit is a huge cooking bag, originally intended for 5.2. It takes 5 Jard's Peculiar Energy Source and Living Steel to craft.
- Pierre is a battle pet intended for 5.2--many players were sad when this didn't make it to live since it has adorable animations and doubles as a cooking fire. It takes 15 Jard's Peculiar Energy Source and Living Steel to craft.
- New to 5.4, Rascal-Bot is a new battle pet that pays tribute to Bad Robot Productions. Click here to see a 3D model of the pet!
Blacksmithing
- Blacksmiths can make Balanced Trillium Ingot, learnt from Plans: Balanced Trillium Ingot and Its Uses. It can be made once a day and requires a Trillium Bar.
- So far, spell data shows that Balanced Trillium Ingot is required for ilvl 541 belts and legs, with the temporary name "PH."
- Based on the tooltip's flavor text, it appears that players can learn entry-level Season 14 PvP recipes when making Balanced Trillium Ingot, similar to how making Lightning Steel Ingot taught players ilvl 458 Season 13 gear. The 5.4 Season 14 recipes are ilvl 476.
Enchanting
- Enchants are getting some new scaling tech in 5.4. Their item level requirement is going away in 5.4--this is also true for enhancements provided by other professions like Lightweave Embroidery.
- As a result, all enchantments can now be put on heirloom items.
- High level enhancements will scale down when placed on a low level item.
- Low level enhancements do not scale up when placed on a high level item.
Leatherworking
- Leatherworkers can make Hardened Magnificent Hide, learnt from Pattern: Hardened Magnificent Hide and Its Uses. It can be made once a day and requires 2 Magnificent Hide.

- Based on the tooltip's flavor text, it appears that players can learn entry-level Season 14 PvP recipes when making Hardened Magnificent Hide, similar to how making Magnificent Hide taught players ilvl 458 Season 13 gear. The 5.4 Season 14 recipes are ilvl 476.

No word on the sources for these yet, but there's 5.4 data for various Noodle Carts that require large amounts of food to make.
